I got my car in 2011 knowing it had a blown head with coolant leaking and rust in the water res. I got the car for $400 after talking the seller down 200. With income tax and a friend and myself doing the repairs to the car, we replaced intake manifold, shaved the heads, egr value, brake pads, water res, some tubes, and a few other things for well under 1k and now the car runs like new. I consider it a steal. Later the security bypass went haywire but the car is over 10 years old so I googled it. Was as simple as taking the radio out, cutting the car on, and cutting a wire...problem fixed. My next project is window regs and a/c compressor and mirror then the car will be fully restored.

Things were always going wrong and needed to be replaced with expensive special parts. The window motor died & supposedly each window has a different specific motor... $750. The stereo LCD went in and out randomly as well as the ABS sensor light. This car also takes special tires... went to wal-mart & got the cheapest of that kind... $500+ for 3 tires. My air/heat duct came undone and i could only faintly feel air if it was set to level 5 (high). I was rear-ended the other day in Christmas traffic; it totaled it (because its plastic), while the bmw that hit me was able to drive away afterward. Kelly Blue book says Ill only get 1k after all that money I put into it.

99 GrandAm purchased used in Feb. 01 in excellent condition (per my mechanic) since, the power windows have been replaced, the water pump, trouble with the breaks, the power mirrors dont work, and the cooling fan sensor has been replaced. It sure looks nice, but overall its not worth the trouble. Im buying a Toyota.

  • good car troubled by bad workmanship - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

Bought the car used with 30k on it. bout 3k out of warrenty found out the injector system was about to fall out of the car. Cost ~$400 to fix, no help from dealership even though they had done a full inspection, that I paid for, right before the warrenty ended. Otherwise car was great right up to 75K before I slammed it into a guardrail at 60mph. Which I walked away from even thought the air bags did not deploy, which im glad I would have been injured if they had. otherwise the car was fun and did great in downtown traffic and state to state highways.

  • Im SO glad I just got rid of mine!!!!! - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

Just traded this lemon in. Got around OK, but small things go wrong constantly. Like: 1)drvrs side pwr window motor blew 2)turn signal crazy (dash clicking continues incessantly after turn) 3)radio stopped working altogether, then just worked again 3 weeks later 4)oxygen sensor caused engine light to go on and off whenever 5) pasgr side mirror torn off in a car wash... by soft cloths no less. I could go on and on. To be fair, it drove nicely for 100K miles til control arms were shot (mechanic says this is BIG problem on Grand Ams). Last straw! EVERY day in last 75K miles, something was wrong with the car. Good riddance and buyer beware!!!

  • Loved it but ready for something new - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

Ive had this car for nearly 4 years! And Ive replaced just about every important part needed for the car to run!! Ive spent over $1000 on my car, not the best but if your willing to have to fixer upper buy this car!! Plus the interior is poor quality, and why brown???

  • Has its ups and its downs - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

Overall I have really enjoyed driving my black Grand Am GT-1 a whole lot. It handles better than anything I have ever owned...I have Brigestone Re730 Z rated tires and they never squeal! However the car has had quality issues...manifold replaced twice, power window regulator, fan switch...luckily I had purchased a bumper to bumper warranty through 75,000 miles with Warranty Direct and it has paid for itself many times over. One design flaw is that the only way to keep out bad outside air is to set it to MAX AC because the car lacks a Recirculate Air button like every car I have ever owned in my life...it is a mystery why they didnt include such an essential....eg Deisel Bus up ahead

  • A Far Cry from Driving Excitement - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM
    By -

This was my first new car and I was very excited, but in the past 3 years, Ive had too many problems to list. I held onto the car since I had an extended warranty, but when they refuse to honor this telling me that a water leak isnt a manufacturers defect, that is where I draw the line. Too many problems and poor customer service! Driving excitement? I think not!

I have had my Grand Am three years on 110102. Have had no engine or elec problems.Door panel peeled back due to sun damage,( Live in 100 degree summer weather), and was replaced no/chg under warantee, have not had a problem since replacement.Car has 49,300 miles on it and still kicks for a V4,no rattles or squeeks. Do not care for the seat releases for letting passengers out of back seat area, they stick too much, hard for older kids and adults to get in and out of, broke off both front seat belt holders from pulling on them ..suggest 4 door instead of coupe for back seat rider use.
